Hynix reported climbed to the number-three spot in the first quarter this year in total DRAM sales with a 16.8 percent share worldwide, according to market researcher iSuppli.

The company's quarterly DRAM sales increased by 12 percent sequentially to reach $918 million. Furthermore, it achieved a remarkable operating profit margin during the quarter, estimated at more than 20 percent.

Infineon Technology was not able to regain the number three spot from Hynix although it has boosted its DRAM revenue by 10 percent sequentially during the quarter to reach $814 million, said iSuppli. 

Samsung Electronics stayed at the top with a 27.1 percent market share, down 2 percentage points from 29.1 percent in the fourth quarter. While number two Micron has not increased its output much and is catching up by Hynix and Infineon, said iSuppli. 

iSuppli said total DRAM market revenue in the first quarter increased to $5.5 billion, up 7 percent from $5.1 billion in the fourth quarter.
