Taiwan's chipset makers are feeling the heat of competition from Intel's decision to aggressively lower the prices of their chipsets. The US chip giant, Intel, is expected to reduce their prices on its 845, 865 and 848 series of chipsets next month.
This will definitely show a decline in the market shares of Taiwan’s chipset makers. Sources say that local chipset makers, such as VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) are now pressured to supply the rapidly increasing demand for entry-level chipsets. In fact, with the announcement of VIA Technologies of a 6-10% price hike in July, they have lost a percentage of its customers to SiS, who confirmed that they have received additional rushed orders.
Moreover, with the production capacities being tight also with the two foundry giants, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) and the weight of the price competition, there is concern that there might be a shortage of integrated chipsets in the coming months.
