Renesas combines PowerVR technology in new processor

Tuesday, May 18, 2004 Renesas Technology has expanded its SH-Mobile applications processors with a version combining its 32-bit core and a PowerVR 2D/3D graphics core from Imagination Technologies.

Dubbed the SH73180, the processor is said to offer an approximately 2.3-fold improvement in performance over previous models. As well as the 2D/3D graphics engine and an MPEG-4 full hardware accelerator, the processor has support for a 3-megapixel camera module.

The device is expected to start sampling in July.

The SH-Mobile3 is capable of 389 MIPS at 216 MHz operation.

The SH4AL-DSP CPU core employs superscalar technology that enables simultaneous execution of two instructions and a seven-stage pipeline architecture to improve performance. At 1.8 MIPS/MHz, it offers approximately a 1.4-fold increase in performance per unit frequency over the 1.3 MIPS/MHz of the current SH3-DSP CPU core. The performance increase enables the device to handle the parallel processing of multiple high-load applications and operations using a general purpose operating system like Linux rather than a dedicated OS.

The instruction set of the DSP is upward-compatible with that of the current core so existing programs can be used and system development time shortened. Imagination Technologies will receive royalties for the PowerVR MBX Lite IP for each processor core shipped by Renesas. Other licenses of the PowerVR IP include Texas Instruments and Philips. Others such as Samsung have access to the technology through agreements with ARM Ltd.
