Harald Eggers, memory group chief executive officer at Infineon Technologies AG, is leaving the company and is to be replaced by Thomas Seifert, head of the wireline communications group with effect from June 1, the company said Wednesday (May 19).
Eggers is leaving Infineon at his own request after more than 25 years' of service to devote more time to his private life, Infineon said.
Reports surfaced recently that Infineon is considering the disposal of its DRAM business, which is the major part of its memory group and responsible for about 40 percent of the company's total sales. Eggers early retirement, at 54 years of age, could indicate that the decision has been taken to dispose of the DRAM business.
In addition, Seifert is credited with transforming Infineon's wireline communications group through extensive restructuring and the sale of Infineon's optical fiber components business to Finisar Corp.
Peter Gruber, chief financial officer of the wireless communications group, is to assume responsibility for that group until a successor for Seifert is appointed.
Eggers would continue to head up several corporate projects until the end of December 2004, after which he would continue to provide consultancy services back to Infineon, the company said.
"The managing board and employees would like to thank Dr. Eggers for his many years of successful work for the company," said Max Dietrich Kley, acting president and chief executive officer of Infineon, in a statement. "The fact that Infineon's memory business has developed in such a good way in the, by its very nature, cyclical DRAM market is due not least to Dr. Eggers' expert understanding as well as his personal, globe-spanning contacts and excellent cultural grasp. We are delighted that Dr. Eggers will continue to be on hand for the company in a consultative capacity," Kley also said.
