Memory price on the move in world market

Friday, May 21, 2004

In North America, buying activity continued to be characterized as thin in the US DRAM spot sector on Wednesday. Sources said that offers were not attracting bids but some observers disagreed. Few bids were detected, but buyers appeared focused on shopping for the lowest prices on modules and chips before committing to any purchases. Values for both SDRAM and DDR modules were assessed lower on the day, while discretes values remained notionally unchanged.

In Asia Pacific, DDR component prices lost further ground in today's trading. Suppliers in Hong Kong reported thin transactions amid bearish sentiment. Prices of higher density DDR 266 32x8 components shed US 10 cents/chip to USD 4.80/chip major brands, while OEM versions trailed at USD 4.55/chip. First-tier DDR 333 32x8 types traded US 10-15 cents/chip lower at USD 4.85-4.90/chip. The OEM versions also fell to USD 4.65/chip. Prices of SDRAM PC 133 and lower density 16x8 parts saw stable pricing, due to comparatively lower stock levels of such components, said sellers.

Due to a public holiday in several major European markets, DRAM activity is subdued. The rest of the week is expected to remain slow as many players expected to be off until the weekend.
