Xilinx, a major supplier of programmable logic solutions, has selected Singapore as its new regional headquarters in the Asia-Pacific region.
The new establishment will provide the essential infrastructure and support to all company's activities - from finance and human resources to sales and IT support in the region.
The new setup will have the facilities for R&D, logistics and warehousing, product test engineering, as well as provide customer support for Xilinx's Asia-Pacific customers, including those in New Zealand, Australia and in the near future India.
By locating its regional headquarters in Singapore, Xilinx expects to have the proximity to work more closely with its partner-suppliers, such as UMC and Amkor. Through this proximity, Xilinx also expects to reduce its cycle-times, lower product costs and improve the quality of its products.
"The most compelling reason for having an Asia-Pacific headquarters is to do with the market place," said Stacy Fender, general manager of Xilinx Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. "Over the last four years, the percentage of Xilinx revenue in Asia- Pacific and Japan has increased from 13% to more than 35%." In 2003, 35% of Xilinx's total revenues were generated from the Asia-Pacific region.
The company is optimistic about chip sales in 2004 and is confident that the economic improvements within the industry during the past few years will continue. One possible factor for the expected growth is the increased demand for electronics products, such as large-screen digital TVs, printers, consumer electronics, disk drives and PC parts, according to Fender. The latest communication applications, such as those for mobile phone color screens and onboard digital cameras have produced a strong demand for handset ICs.
