Semiconductor growth is expected to grow significantly over the next four years, with one blip in 2006 caused by overcapacity, according to figures compiled by Gartner Dataquest.
That growth is expected to hit 24.7 percent this year, followed by 13.8 percent in 2005. The market then is expected to drop 2.2 percent, followed again by an 8.9 percent pickup in 2007 and an 11.8 percent hike in 2008.
Bryan Lewis, VP and chief analyst at Dataquest, said that what will continue to fuel growth will be cell phones with cameras and other digital consumer devices, a PC upgrade cycle, and the long-dormant wire communications market.
Lewis said that the market is expected to hit $300 billion in 2008. In addition, there are signs that the overall ASIC market is remarkably healthy. He said that what is slowing design starts is consolidation of multiple chips into a single one. That accounts for the drop-off from 11,000 design starts in 1997 to an expected 4,000 in 2007.
“What were four designs are now one,†said Lewis. “Integration is the key. Integration is driving it down, but new technologies for structured ASICs and platform ASICs will drive it up.â€
He said that ASIC sales will increase 13.2 percent in 2004, versus 3.1 percent in 2003 and negative 0.5 percent in 2002.
The ASSP market is growing even faster, although from a smaller base. It will increase 22.6 percent in 2004, versus 15.5 percent in 2003. And the FPGA market is expected to grow 29.7 percent in 2004 versus 13.1 percent in 2003.
