Chipset companies to deliver PCI-Express Southbridge

Tuesday, June 8, 2004
During the Computex Taipei, Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) has displayed several motherboards using their new PCI-Express south bridge chipsets namely SiS 965 and the SiS 965L and will start volume production later this month and will be available on July.

SiS said that these new chipsets are the most compatible substitute to Intel's PCI Express 915/925 chipsets. SiS also plans to launch the SiS 966 south bridge in the fourth quarter. The SiS 966 will provide support for four PCI Express x1 slots, compared with just two for the SiS 965, said the company sources.

ALi's M1573 will be paired with ATI's north bridge, to support both the PCI Express x1 and PCI Express x16 standards. Not far behind are two top local IC design houses like VIA Technologies and ALi planning to start their marketing plans to heat up the IC market. VIA and ALi to introduce PCI Express-compatible south bridge chipsets, the VT8251 and M1573 respectively in the third quarter.

The SiS 965 and the VT8251 both will be paired with north bridge chipsets that are compatible not only with Intel's 915 architecture but also existing platforms, the sources said. The SiS 965 can be paired with either the SiS 656 north bridge to support LGA775 processors or the SiS 756 north bridge to support K8 processors.
