The world is converging into wideband

Thursday, June 10, 2004 The DSL sector added another 9.5 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2004, bringing the sector's worldwide subscriber total to 37.4 million, according to a new report released Wednesday (June 9) by Point Topic and the DSL Forum.

"This is the biggest quarterly addition to the global DSL subscriber figures, representing a growth of nearly 15 percent," DSL Forum President Tom Starr said in a statement.

According to the report, China, France, and the U.S. represented more than half of the new subscribers added in the quarter. China signed up 2.8 million subscribers while the U.S. added 1.18 million and France added 1.04 million.

The report also claims that thirteen countries now have more than 1 million DSL subscribers. Additionally, the report said that 16 countries have more than 10 percent of their phone lines delivering DSL services.

The Asian regions continued to hold the number one ranking for total subscribers worldwide. Europe maintained the number 2 spot while the US held the number 3 position.
