Renesas to increase outsource to Taiwan

Thursday, June 10, 2004
Japanese chip supplier Renesas Tech Corp. announced that the company will outsource US$200 million worth of chips to Taiwan. The company's executives pointed out that the planned office is its Taiwan branch's first international procurement facility, which is part of Renesas's plan to boost its international procurement efficiency and enhance its cooperation ties with Taiwan's wafer foundries as well as chip packaging and testing houses.

Renesas COO and president, Satoru Ito, pointed out that his company will increase contracts to Taiwanese chipmaker PowerChip Semiconductor Corp. (PSC) for AG-AND flash memory chips. Renesas will process 5,000 wafers per month at PSC’s 12-inch fab in the fourth quarter of this year, said Masahiro Yamamura, executive general manager of the Japan-based firm’s memory business unit.

The company will also raise production at its own 12-inch fab to 7,000-8,000 wafers per month by year-end, up from about 4,000 wafers currently, he added. Renesas outsources NOR flash production to Macronix International. For packaging and testing, Renesas will outsource to Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE), Siliconware Precision Industries Ltd (SPIL) and King Yuan Electronics. Renesas is outsourcing logic chip production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), mostly using TSMC’s 0.13-micron and more advanced processes. Renesas is a merger between Hitachi's chip-making unit and Mitsubishi's chip-making unit.
