Samsung Electronics has developed an integrated circuit that provides terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) services within mobile telephones, according to reports out of South Korea.
Samsung claimed to have the first chip for land-based services, which would allow users to watch terrestrially transmitted video channels on-demand through their mobile phones, the report said.
DMB is a South Korean digital video standard similar to the Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) suite of standards in use in Europe for cable, satellite (DVB-S) and terrestrial broadcast (DVB-T).
Samsung said it would team up with SK Telecom to offer the satellite-based DMB service by September at the earliest, the report added.
