Large-lot prices for FPGAs (field-programmable gate arrays), a type of system chip used in mobile phone base stations and other equipment, continue to fall.
Demand for FPGAs used in digital consumer electronics is rising, but manufacturers of the chips are taking steps to cut costs, including using large-diameter silicon wafers, and are lowering prices in an effort to broaden the market.
At present, the large-lot price for standard 100,000-gate units is 1,500 to 10,000 yen a piece, about 10% lower than six months ago.
US semiconductor makers Xilinx Inc and Altera Corp have a roughly 80% share of the world market for FPGAs, the circuit designs of which can be altered after purchase.
