AMD setup Japanese R & D Lab

Thursday, June 24, 2004 Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has opened an engineering laboratory within its Tokyo office that is intended to help AMD penetrate low-power portable equipment markets.

The company plans to hire 15 to 20 engineers over the next 12 to 18 months and set them to work on thin and light notebook PCs and consumer electronics and communication devices that require low power consumption.

"Japan is recognized worldwide as a leader driving the shift toward mobile computing," said Dirk Meyer, executive vice president of AMD's computation products group, in a statement. "We envision that x86 technology will continue to expand across mobile platforms, enriching the computing experience for users everywhere. AMD's Japanese manufacturing partners are an integral part of our efforts to make this vision a reality." The AMD Japan Engineering Lab is to be managed initially by Steve Polzin, a senor AMD fellow and the company's chief platform architect. The Lab engineers will perform support engineering in the areas of electrical and thermal design for the Athlon 64, Alchemy and Geode processors.

"We will work closely with AMD's JEL to develop future notebook PCs which meet our customers' needs in a timely fashion," said Hirohide Nakagawa, group general manager of information and communication systems at Sharp Corp., in the statement issued by AMD.
