Wistron, will manufacture 2~3 million motherboards using Intel's latest 915 and 925 chipsets, which are built on Intel-championed PCI Express bus format. Following the release of its 915/925 chipsets, Intel is expected to increase the outsourcing of its motherboards to 17-18 million units this year, up from 15 million units in 2003.
Hon Hai Precision Industry, Mitac International and First International Computers are also among Taiwanese computer manufacturers that Intel has signed up to supply it the boards. Hon Hai to supply 7~8 million motherboards to Intel while FIC and Mitac are expected to split 4~5 million boards.
Intel Taiwan's executives expected the two chipsets along with another and six new microprocessors rolled out recently to trigger new procurements of new computers as replacements for older models. Many Taiwanese motherboard suppliers expected these new chips will drive the world personal computer market again and anticipated compatible boards to account for 50% of the shipments worldwide in the second half this year.
Intel's order would be the first motherboard order after Wistron split from Acer Group. Wistron's top notebook PC clients including Acer, IBM, Dell Computer and Hewlett-Packard (HP) while for desktop computers are Gateway and HP.
