Local sources reported that Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) has recently received a notebook PC order from US-retailer giant Wal-Mart. The report is based on the monthly shipment of notebook PC, which ECS declined to elaborate the actual number of Wal-Mart’s notebook PC order.
Industry's experts estimated that ECS is shipping around 40,000~50,000 notebook PCs per month that began in May. Prior to the notebook-computer order, Wal-Mart had filled orders for liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels from Tatung Corp., a leading Taiwanese supplier of household appliances. According to market researcher International Data Corp. (IDC), Dell Computer and Hewlett-Packard (HP) took up around 30% of the global notebook PC market, respectively, further squeezing the second-tier suppliers. Industry watchers pointed out that more and more non-IT retailers like Wal-Mart and BestBuy have begun involvement in IT-product retails and trying to build their own brands. New entrants of notebook computers, they noted, have seen the light at the end of the tunnel for their business with the rising retailer brands and standardized notebook-computer parts promoted by Intel.
Taiwan's industry watchers analyzed that the Wal-Mart contract gives new entrants of notebook computers a big boost at a time when established players already dominate the world market. Several motherboard companies like Asustek, Micro Star, ECS and Gigabyte have jumped into notebook PC business. Only MSI and Gigabyte started this year while Asustek already established its own brand while ECS earlier established I-Buddie desknote that was later sold the entire notebook PC to Asustek. Meanwhile, ECS is expecting its July motherboard shipments to reach 1.4 million units and 47,000 notebooks this month.
