Sony Corp reported a more than 20-fold jump in net profit for the April-June quarter thanks to gains from subsidiaries including much improved Sony Ericsson.
Sony Ericsson contributed 5.8 billion yen to Sony's consolidated earnings, reversing a 5.8 billion yen loss for the same period last year.
Revenue in the electronics segment, which includes Sony's major consumer products such as DVD players, televisions and digital cameras and accounts for nearly 70 percent of total sales, slipped 0.2 percent to 1.098 trillion yen.
That decline was due to a drop in semiconductor sales to Sony's games division as the company switched to outsource production of its popular game console PlayStation 2 to third parties in China.
