Money spent on online advertising is expected to surpass that spent on magazines in three years, a market research firm said Wednesday.
By 2007, advertisers are expected to spend $15 billion on Internet, slightly more on magazines, Jupitermedia's JupiterResearch said in a new report.
The pace of money flowing to online advertising, defined as a paid message on web sites, online services or other interactive medium, such as instant message or e-mail, is expected to continue in 2009, reaching $16.1 billion.
Even though magazines will fall behind the Internet in ad dollars, the paper medium is not losing money to web sites, JupiterResearch analyst Nate Elliott said. Over the next five years, ad spending on magazines is expected to remain flat, and not decline, which would have indicated money was being taken away. Instead, advertisers are adding online to their budgets, experts say.
