Toshiba narrowed net loss in the quarter

Friday, July 30, 2004

Toshiba Corp. said its group net loss in the April-June quarter narrowed thanks to global demand for digital products. The company posted a net loss of 7.8 billion yen (70 million dollars), sharply lower than the net loss of 36.8 billion yen recorded during the same period last year.

The improvement was driven by rising sales of semiconductor devices, mobile phones and liquid crystal displays (LCDs) used for flat TVs and personal computers, the company said.

Pre-tax profit stood at 257 million yen, reversing a pre-tax loss of 50.9 billion yen a year earlier, while revenue rose 11.7 percent to 1.25 trillion yen.

"Sales of digital products such as mobile phones and those of electronic devices such as semiconductor products rose sharply in the quarter, which helped us generate profits," at the operating and pre-tax levels, said a spokeswoman for Toshiba.

Operating profit came to 14.1 billion yen in the quarter, reversing a loss of 41.3 billion yen a year earlier.

Sales of digital products including mobile phone handsets rose 13 percent to 487.1 billion yen on the back of steady demand, particularly in the United States and Europe, while sales of digital devices including semiconductors grew 15 percent to 330 billion yen.
