Seeking to capitalize on the increasingly processor-intensive needs of the home and business PC market, AMD has introduced a line of desktop and mobile processors designated the Sempron series.

Processor makers have in recent weeks unveiled a wave of parts to update their product lines and attempt to revitalize interest in the PC market. Last week, AMD added several parts to its Athlon line for high-performance mobile and tablet PC applications. Rival Intel responded by expanding its Pentium M and Celeron M line for lightweight notebooks, subnotebooks and tablet PCs.

According to AMD, the Sempron processors aim at home and business users whose needs have gone beyond e-mail, word processing and web browsing to photo editing, downloading music and web conferencing.

"Today, AMD charts a new course for the industry by changing the definition of everyday computing to reflect what businesses and consumers really want to do with their PCs," said Marty Seyer, corporate VP and GM of AMD's Computation Products Group Microprocessor Business Unit, in a statement.

Several PC makers will offer machines with the Sempron processor. They include HP, which will incorporate the chip on some Pavilion and Compaq Presario PCs, and Lenovo Group Ltd, which will offer AMD Sempron processor-based desktop systems in China. Acer, Medion and Twinhead will also design the Sempron processor into notebook and desktop systems the second half of this year.

For desktop PCs, Sempron processors include the 2200+, 2300+, 2400+, 2500+, 2600+, 2800+ and 3100+. Available immediately, they are priced from $39 to $126 each in quantities of 1,000. Mobile versions of the Sempron processors 2600+, 2800+ and 3000+ for full-size notebooks cost $84, $108 and $120 each respectively in 1,000-piece quantities and will be available August. Mobile versions of the 2600+ and 2800+ processors for thin and light notebooks cost $85 and $99 each in volume and will also be available next month.
