Global DRAM revenue increased in Q2

Friday, August 13, 2004
The global DRAM revenue reached US$6.7 billion in second quarter, up by 19.8 percent increase from US$5.6 billion in the first quarter, according to preliminary estimates by market research firm Gartner Inc.

Top of the DRAM makers are Samsung and Hynix, which saw their revenues reached US$1.98 billion and US$1.1 billion respectively. Andrew Norwood, an analyst at Gartner said: "Hynix's strong presence in the legacy and graphics DRAM segments, which had strong pricing, enabled it to outgrow its rivals, Micron and Infineon.

" Elpida Memory took the highest growth with 50 percent from Q1 at US$240 million to US$360 million in Q2. While the DRAMeXchange reported that the DRAM spot prices slipped further last week, although the trading volume expanded as some module houses began restocking inventory. Average spot prices for 256Mbit (32Mbitx8) DDR400/333/266 chips were quoted as US$4.34, US$4.22 and US$4.16 respectively.

Sources indicated that Chinese traders dumped Hynix DDR400/266 parts in Hong Kong, pushing prices for Hynix parts much lower than other major brands. Here are the July's revenues reports from Taiwan's DRAM makers: Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) generated NT$5.2 billion, Nanya Technology hit NT$3.3 billion and roMOS Technologies raked NT$3.8 billion.
