LCD revenue dropped due to supply pressure

Friday, August 13, 2004
Several top local TFT-LCD manufacturers including AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO), Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd. (CPT), Quanta Display Inc. and HannStar Display Corp. reported their revenues in July declined as much as 15 percent compared to June due to falling unit prices of LCD panels.

AUO reported their July revenue reached NT$14.6 billion, down by 8%. Quanta had July revenue of NT$5.43 billion. CMO's consolidated July revenues including revenues from its Japanese subsidiary International Display Technology Inc., a joint venture between CMO and IBM Japan to NT$9.08 billion, down by 19.7%. CPT's July revenue tallied NT$9.3 billion, down by 19%. HannStar's July revenue hit NT$3.8 billion, down by 18.9%. As for this month price quotation, a 17-inch monitor panel is about US$280, while a 15-inch model is about US$210.

Meanwhile, the shipments of large-size TFT LCD panels from Taiwanese companies hit a record high of 14.8 million units in the second quarter, up by 71% compared to same period of last year, according to the Taiwan-based Market Intelligence Center (MIC). MIC said 82 percent from the total TFT-LCD panel shipment came from 14.1-inch, 15-inch and 17-inch sizes.

Also, an international research firm, DisplaySearch is expecting an oversupply of 5-8% TFT LCD panels in the second half of this year. This prompted several local TFT-LCD makers to cut down on production in the second half.
