Although remain to be strong, worldwide PC shipments for the year will be lower than previously expected due to weaker second quarter, Gartner said Monday.
Global shipments for 2004 are now expected to increase by 12.6 percent over last year to 185 million units, based on a preliminary third-quarter forecast from Gartner Inc. The research firm had predicted in the second quarter a 13.4 percent increase.
While acknowledging that higher oil prices could cut consumer confidence and affect PC sales, the firm still believes the PC market will achieve double-digit growth.
Businesses are expected to be a major driver for PC sales this year, Gartner said. Many companies are sitting on older PCs that are expected to be replaced, barring a significant downturn in the U.S. economy.
