TSMC files another suit against SMIC

Wednesday, August 25, 2004
Foundry chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has filed another suit against Chinese rival Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co. (SMIC) with the U.S. International Trade Commission.

TSMC said in a statement to the Taiwan Stock Exchange that it had evidence to show SMIC had infringed upon three more of its patents and asked the United States to ban related SMIC products.

"The company asked the U.S. ITC to conduct immediate investigation of the suit and to ban imports of SMIC products involving infringement of three of our patents or theft of trade secrets," TSMC said.

TSMC would also reportedly seek compensation for its losses.

Last December, TSMC filed a similar complaint against SMIC in the U.S. District Court of Northern California, alleging the company had infringed on multiple patents and misappropriated trade secrets.
