Uptick demand for PCs and wirelss gears during holiday seasons is expected to cause spot DRAM shortages in the second half of 2004, according to an executive from Samsung Electronics.
For months, the DRAM business has been sluggish in terms of demand and average selling prices. "I would not say that there will be huge shortages in the second half. But there will be spot shortages," said the executive. Nevertheless, potential shortages will not impact much on average selling prices, he said.
PCs are no longer the only driver for memory. Wireless is a big consumer, he said. "The hand phone will be at the center of the personal universe," he added.
