HP unveiled its own version of Apple's iPod music player, part of its alliance with Apple Computer as well as HP's own foray into consumer electronics.
HP will sell its version of the iPod in a wide range of retail outlets such as Costco and Office Depot. The HP-Apple deal, announced in January, goes well beyond distribution and includes substantial marketing efforts as well.
HP will put its marketing muscle behind Apple's player and its iTunes music downloading Web site by putting $300 million onto marketing it. It will also load the iTunes software on as many as 8 million new HP computers this fall.
HP's iPods are identical to Apple's in price and features, with the exception of an HP logo on the back. HP will sell a $299 version with a 20-gigabyte hard drive and a $399 version with a 40-gigabyte hard drive.
