SIA reports downward adjustment on July figures

Tuesday, September 7, 2004 Worldwide chip sales in July 2004 were US$16.46 billion according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), up 33.7 percent on the same month a year before and a significant easing of the phenomenal growth rate recorded in the first half of 2004.

The 'actual' sales of $16.46 billion were well below the $18.0 billion three-month average reported by the SIA on Thursday (Sept. 2). It was also down on 'actual' sales of $16.82 billion and $20.70 billion recorded by the SIA for May and June.

The SIA and other regional industry groups publicize sales statistics gathered by World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) as the three-month moving averages of monthly sales activity rather than the actual numbers. The SIA calculates averages to smooth out variations due to companies' sales reporting calendars, which often make March, June, September and December five-week months thereby inflating those month's numbers.

June 2004's 'actual' sales had been up 40.3 percent from the 'actual' sales in June 2003, while sales in the first half of 2004, of $102.16 billion had been up 36.2 percent on the $74.99 billion recorded in the first half of 2003. With July's 'actual numbers the year-to-date sales for 2004 climbed to $118.62 billion, up 35.9 percent on the $87.30 billion of chips sold in the first seven months of 2003.

The Asia Pacific region's 'actual' sales figure of $6.84 billion in July was 75.9 percent ahead of sales of $4.66 billion in July 2003. In July 2004 Japan recorded $3.85 billion of sales, the Americas region $2.84 billion and Europe was responsible for $2.94 billion.
