Several electronics companies announced at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco Thursday (Sept. 9) they would collaborate to define a standard interface for small form factor disk drives used in handheld and consumer electronics products.
The initiative, called CE-ATA, is spearheaded by Intel Corp., Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Marvell Semiconductor Inc., Seagate Technology and Toshiba America Information Systems.
The companies expect the standard to be tailored specifically to the consumer and handheld electronic market needs for low pin count, low voltage, power efficiency, cost effectiveness and integration efficiency.
"No disk drive interface exists today that is tailored to the needs of the handheld and CE market segments, so disk drives have had to make do with other interface alternatives that are complex and cumbersome or simply ill-suited to meet the needs of disk drives in space and power constrained tiny handhelds," said Knut Grimsrud, Intel's CE-ATA senior principal engineer, in a statement.
CE-ATA's proponents expect the new storage interface to help engineers optimize disk drive designs as well as benefit host silicon providers and product integrators. They also expect the interface to drive development of additional products with storage capabilities.
The specification is slated for completion the first half of 2005, with end products supporting the technology possibly becoming available several months later.
