European supply tighthen while Asia is flat

Friday, September 10, 2004

Asia/Pacific prices of DDR components held largely steady in today's trade following 5 cents/chip losses registered in the past two days. First-tier DDR 266/333/400 32x8 chips traded at a stable-to-soft $3.85/chip, $4.02-$4.05/chip and $4.28-$4.30/chip, respectively. Sellers remain optimistic of achieving higher numbers ahead of the seasonally strong October production period. In the contract arena, August prices for DIMMs PC 2100 spec 256MB modules were settled within a narrower band of $37-$39/module, against July's $35-$40/module. Players said September prices are likely to be settled at a roll over.

In Europe, sources indicate that prices for DDR modules are broadly stable. Producers describe demand as healthy, while distributors say buying interest is much below expectations compared to September last year. Some comment that chip values have been more volatile than modules in recent days, with chip numbers being adjusted downward to represent current ideas. DDR availability is said to be poor, with players believing that there are some production issues at a number of original manufacturers and that some customers are on allocation. However, this could not be confirmed at the source.
