Hypermemory by ATI

Monday, September 20, 2004 ATI Technologies has announced a memory technology that cuts PC system costs by using system memory for graphics processing.

The technology uses the PCI Express high-speed bi-directional data transfer interface, known as "hypermemory".

Using PCI Express to store and access graphics data in system memory results in less dependence on graphics memory and, ultimately, lower overall system costs, ATI said. On the other hand, "AGP's constraint is not just that it is slower but that it is uni-directional."

"ATI has very aggressively embraced PCI Express, but one criticism of that standard is that it is expensive," analyst pointed out. "So I think one reason behind ATI's launch of HyperMemory is to bring down the cost of PCI Express and thereby increase adoption of the standard."

Graphics cards featuring HyperMemory will be announced before the end of this year.
