Infineon Technologies AG announced the opening of Infineon Technologies Suzhou Co, Ltd. a testing & packaging plant in Suzhou, China. The construction of the new Suzhou plant began in October 2003 as part of a joint venture between Infineon and the China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park Venture, with Infineon holding a 72.5% share and China-Singapore Suzhou holding the remaining.
"With this cooperation, we are systematically expanding our presence in the future market of China," said Peter Bauer, CMO of Infineon Technologies AG. Infineon moved its China headquarters to Shanghai from Hong Kong in 2003, with total investment reaching US$240 million in the same year.
"We currently conduct business with several partners in the area of front-end and back-end manufacturing. The expansion of our R&D facilities in Shanghai and Xian are progressing nicely." Infineon, is the second-largest chip maker in Europe has scheduled investment totaling US$1 billion in the new test-and-assembly plant, and volume production will start in the first quarter of 2005, with a maximum capacity of one billion chips per year and employ more than 1,000 people.
Also, Infineon inaugurated an IT Development Center in Suzhou focusing on manufacturing processes. The development center will employ between 80 and 100 engineers, which will support the backend Suzhou manufacturing fab and become part of the worldwide IT Manufacturing Center of Competence (CoC). The development center has been created to support Infineon's IT activities in the Asia-Pacific region concentrating mainly on the manufacturing process including manufacturing execution system, equipment integration & high automation, data collection & analysis, and business intelligence systems.
