International Sematech has named Infineon Technologies' Sitaram R. Arkalgud as director of its interconnect division, the Austin-based R&D consortium said today.
Arkalgud, who will serve a three-year assignment at Sematech, has more than 14 years of experience in logic and memory areas within the chip industry, according to Sematech. He is the author of 22 publications and holds ten U.S. patents. He recently led a global, multinational team in developing magnetic RAM (MRAM).
"Sitaram has been an asset to the entire chip industry, and we're fortunate to have his technical experience and leadership abilities available to Sematech," Betsy Weitzman, Sematechs COO for Advanced Technologies, said in a statement. "There are many challenges to be addressed as interconnect (technology) faces continued scaling and evaluates new materials and processes needed to support that scaling."
About 50 percent of the fabrication cost of today's advanced ICs is driven by interconnects, with the percentage growing for each new technology generation, according to Sematech.
Prior to joining Sematech, Arkalgud served as director, project manager, and a principal engineer of the MRAM Development Alliance between Infineon and IBM. He also worked as a technology officer and product manager for Infineon. Earlier, Arkalgud functioned as a senior principal staff engineer/scientist at Motorola Inc., working in logic and advanced memory projects.
Arkalgud holds a doctorate and master's degree in materials engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., and a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering from Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Suratkal, India.
