TI to market Memsic automotive sensors

Friday, October 1, 2004 Memsic Inc., a startup company that has developed and deployed CMOS-based MEMS accelerometers and sensors, has struck a marketing and sales agreement with Texas Instruments Inc., Memsic said Friday (Oct. 1).

TI's sensors and controls group is to sell Memsic products to the automotive market and Texas Instruments has agreed to collaborate with Memsic on the development of automotive-specific products that Memsic would make for TI on a foundry basis.

Memsic is set to supply products to Texas Instruments from a 45,000 square foot MEMS fabrication facility located in Wuxi, China, which has a current manufacturing capacity of 3 million units per month.

"For the first time, Memsic sensor technology will be available from a market leader in automotive sensor technology. The automotive market is currently shrinking its supplier base and raising entry barriers for new companies," said Yang Zhao, Memsic's chief executive officer in a statement. "This agreement will now allow auto OEMS and Tier One suppliers access to Memsic's highly reliable technology through an established automotive supplier they are familiar with."

"We are just beginning to tap the automotive market potential of Memsic's thermal sensing technology and are excited about the advantages that this technology offers TI's customers," stated Gary Baker, manager of strategic business development at TI sensors and controls, in the same statement.

Memsic is one of the companies on version 2.0 of the Silicon Strategies' 60 Emerging Startups list, also known as the Silicon 60.
