Stronger-than-expected demand for notebooks is expected to drive up demand this quarter for SO-DIMMs (small-outline dual-inline memory modules), and chips with a 16Mbit×16 configuration, according to sources.
PC makers originally expected only desktop sales would grow at a fast pace this quarter, but they now forecast notebook shipments will grow 20% sequentially in the fourth quarter, according to sources with DRAM makers.
As reported on October 5, Taiwan’s notebook makers are running their production plants in China 24 hours per day to meet demand. Sources attribute the demand growth to drops in LCD panel prices and a planned October price cut for Intel’s Pentium M CPUs, as well as other factors
