Broadcom delivers voice-over-WLAN in 2 chips

Monday, October 11, 2004 Broadcom Corp. has condensed all of its Wi-Fi and voice-over-Internet Protocol hardware and software technologies into two chips. A phone equipped with the chip set could replace a consumer's cordless phone, but would also browse the Web, and send e-mail or instant messages, without compromising voice quality or battery life, Broadcom said.

One of the chips in the set, the BCM4318, is essentially the same 802.11g front-end and baseband/media-access control device that Broadcom announced this past June as AirForce One 54g. The second chip, however, is brand new. The BCM1160 is built around an ARM926 core, and includes all the hardware and software required for processing voice-over-IP for Wi-Fi, and for processing and interfacing a 1.3-Mpixel camera and a 262,000-color LCD. The two chips communicate via an SDIO interface.
