Worldwide DRAM demand is forecast to outpace supply 8.4% in October, compared to 2.3% in September, according to DRAMeXchange.
DRAM supply trailed demand in the first three months this year, but the situation reversed from May to August during the slow season, according to the research firm. The supply lagging started to surface in September. Sources at DRAM makers in Taiwan claim the shortage will persist through the end of this year.
Aside from seasonal effect, the supply lag has something to do with chipmakers¡¦ allocation of capacity to other products, slower-than-expected 12-inch capacity ramps and tightening testing capacity, the sources said.
