Intel announced to cancel plans for a 4-gigahertz chip release, saying it would improve CPUs performance other than faster clock speed.
The company had originally said it would release the fast Pentium 4 by the end of 2004. Then in July, it pushed back the release to early next year. The cancellation came amid the chip industry has begun focusing on improving chip performance through other ways than speed.
The company said its engineers are studying adding additional processing engines to a single chip and improving the efficiency in how the chips interact with the rest of the system.
Meantimes, Intel still could produce a processor that runs at 4 GHz or faster, just won't be part of the current Pentium 4 family.
