Moving in a new direction on the I/O front, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. on Tuesday (Oct. 19) said that its 64-bit processors will soon support PCI Express.
Partners ATI, NVIDIA, SiS, ULi and VIA will be offering a broad range of PCI Express solutions for AMD's 64-bit processors.
PCI Express is a next-generation, graphics-to-chipset interface, which increases throughput capability. The technology has been exclusively pushed by rival Intel Corp., that is, until now. AMD has backed a competitive technology, dubbed HyperTransport.
"Our customers want choice," said Marty Seyer, corporate vice president and general manager of AMD's Microprocessor Business Unit, in a statement. "It is an ideal compliment to HyperTransport technology, and is expected to dramatically increase graphics and data transmission rates, enhancing the cinematic-quality experience offered by AMD Athlon 64 processors."
AMD also rolled out the Athlon 64 FX-55 processor, which is geared for enthusiasts and hard-core gamers. AMD also rolled out the Athlon 64 processor 4000+ for high-performance business computing.
The AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 processor and AMD Athlon 64 processor 4000+ are available immediately worldwide. All pricing is in 1,000-unit PIB quantities.
