AMD caught up with FX-55 and 4000+ processor

Wednesday, October 20, 2004

Aimed at hard-core gamers, AMD’s Athlon FX-55 and 4000+ processors, announced this week, look to provide use strained silicon on insulator (SOI) technology to enable extreme PC performance, the company said.

A number of OEMs, including Thomson, Alienware, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, are developing systems based on the processors, AMD said.

“With the AMD Athlon FX-55 processor, performance-hungry gamers and enthusiasts will be able to experience intense graphics, virtual worlds, high-resolution video and sophisticated artificial intelligence, providing a computing experience that looks and feels like an extension of reality,” said Marty Seyer, corporate VP and general manager of the microprocessor business unit, computation products group at AMD, in a statement.

These 32- and 64-bit desktop and mobile processors were designed with enhanced virus protection capabilities, which offers an additional level of integrated security to identify and prevent the spread of certain viruses, as well as certain computer worms and Trojan horses when enabled by Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

The AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 processor and AMD Athlon 64 processor 4000+ are available now, priced at $827 and $729, respectively.
