Taiwan IC designers expect recovery

Thursday, October 21, 2004
Majority of the Taiwan's integrated chip (IC) designers are expecting their gross profit to pick up in the fourth quarter, after struggled in the second and third quarters.

MediaTek Inc. raked in revenue of NT$4.2 billion in September, higher than expected but still lowered than last year. MediaTek has accumulated total revenue of NT$30.4 billion in first three quarters, up 10% from the same period of last year. Novatek Microelectronics Co., Ltd. saw its September revenue rise 2% from August this year and over 30% from one year earlier, to NT$1.43 billion last month. The company's executives expected earnings for this quarter to rise moderately thanks to slowdown of slumping LCD panel prices.

ALi Corp.'s September 2004 revenue of NT$473.5 million represented only a moderate gain from the August level but posted an 8.8% loss from the same month of last year. Sitronix Technology Co., Ltd. had NT$206 million of revenue last month, 8% more than its August value and rising 66.23% from the comparable period of last year.

Prolific Technology Inc.'s executives expected the company's MPEG4-chip business to bottom out sometime soon this quarter on grounds that its business already hit the bottom last month. They pointed out that the company's third-quarter business missed expectations mostly because of slower-than-expected inventory-backlog depletions of handset transmission chips at retailers. The company projected its revenue of this quarter to rise 5% to 15% from the third quarter.
