Intel Corp. announced Thursday (Oct. 21) it had canceled plans to develop a liquid crystal on silicon (LcoS) chip for projection TVs, according to several online reports.
Intel originally unveiled plans to develop an LcoS chip in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. However, the company said in August it would not introduce the chip at the year's end as planned.
A company spokesman was quoted in several reports saying Intel had decided against continuing the project after looking at the investment required and timetable needed to realize a return.
While competing microdisplay technologies such as Texas Instruments DLP (Digital Light Processing) continue to advance, LcoS technology has undergone several recent setbacks.
Earlier this month, Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands said it would exit the rear-projection LcoS business next month, shutting down several plants, as the company was unwilling to make the needed investments to ramp up production.
Last month, Brillian Corp. announced that Sears Roebuck and Company canceled plans to sell a 65in. high-definition microdisplay-based TV incorporating Brillian's LcoS technology, due to production delays.
