NEC launched Notebook with Built-in Fuel Cell

Monday, October 25, 2004
At the WPC EXPO 2004 held last week at Tokyo Big Sight, NEC Corp's demonstration of its fuel cell for notebook PCs attracted visitors' attention.

Compared with the prototype exhibited in previous year, this year's prototype is more attractive because of its higher output density, and the self-control fuel cell system.

To boost output density, NEC has improved platinum particle catalyst, among other elements. The company used platinum particle with a diameter of 2nm, slightly smaller than that used in the last year's prototype, while dispersing it evenly to expand the surface area for catalysis. "We have also changed the way to disperse particle," an attendant said. The company has not yet disclosed the number and the dimensions of the power generator cells. An average output is 10W, while a maximum output is 13W.

The self-control system's functions include supplemental power supply using the Li-ion secondary battery when peak power is required for reasons such as start-up, fuel supply in proportion to output, and recharge of the Li-ion secondary battery under normal operation. NEC said last year's prototype needed an AC adaptor to charge the Li-ion secondary battery. The company described this system as "self-control," because it allows a PC to use fuel cell as its main power source without using an AC adaptor.
