Nanya Technology expects DRAM demand from PC OEMs will continue outstripping the allocated capacity of chipmakers this quarter and will drive up contract prices for the second half of this month, according to Pei-lin Pai, company spokesperson, at an October 20 investors conference.
Pai shares the bullish sentiment of Samsung Electronics, and he stated that corporate PC replacement orders and seasonality will boost demand for PCs this quarter, with more PCs now being shipped with 512MB of DRAM.
Although chipmakers are ramping 12-inch capacity, only a portion of the additional capacity will be allocated to PC OEMs, he added. For example, Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation, which has the largest 12-inch DRAM capacity in Taiwan, traditionally sells the majority of its DRAM chips in the spot market.
Inotera Memories, a joint venture between Nanya and Infineon Technologies, currently has monthly wafer starts of 24,000 wafers and plans to reach 54,000 wafers next year.
Pai expects DRAM contract prices for the second half of this month to increase 2-3% since the supply of tested chips will still be constrained by a testing capacity crunch.
One PC OEM is currently seeking an agreement with Nanya in an attempt to secure DRAM supply until the end of first quarter 2005, Pai added.
A source with another chipmaker said that PC OEMs also began sourcing DRAM in the spot market, and modules made by Samsung Electronics, Hynix Semiconductor and Infineon Technologies are in shortage.
For the second half of this month, average contract prices for 256MB DRAM modules increased by 1.3% to US$39.2 per module, and 512MB SO-DIMMs were up 1.1% to US$91.8, DRAMeXchange reported today.@
