AMD has announced low cost computer, called the Personal Internet Communicator (PIC). The machine is priced at US$249 with display, so that it can be affordable in developing countries..
Reports said the stripped-down system is based on AMD's Geode GX500 embedded processor and comes with 128Mbytes of DDR SDRAM, a 10Gbyte hard drive, four USB ports, a mouse, keyboard and modem.
AMD does not plan to market the system itself but wants telephone and internet service providers to badge the unit and sell it to customers. AMD announced a tie-up with Tata Indicom to sell the PIC in India, according to reports.
It is not clear how consumers in developed countries would be able to buy the PIC.
