SGI said a customer in Japan will introduce an SGI Altix supercomputer based on 2,048 Intel Itanium 2 processors with "the world's largest memory capacity" of more than 13 terabytes memory, according to the firm.
The system is being built for Japan's Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) for energy systems development, SGI said. SGI said its Japan unit cooperated with Fujitsu Limited to supply the supercomputer to JAERI.
SGI said the system will be used to create 3D visualization renderings.
