Bucking the trend for U.S. based companies to set up new plants and offices offshore, Dell Computer Corp. (Austin, Tx.,) is adding a third U.S. manufacturing location, this one in Triad, N.C.The North Carolina plant is the third new facility Dell has announced this year in the United States; others include a customer contact center in Oklahoma serving the company's home and small business customers and a distribution center in Ohio for Dell's growing printing and computer peripherals business.
In July, Dell also announced a customer contact center in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The North Carolina facility, to be built at a yet-to-be determined site in Triad, will produce desktop computers for Dell's U.S. East Coast business and consumer customers. The plant is slated to open in late 2005 and initially employ 700, expanding to 1,500 within five years.
Dell's other U.S. manufacturing operations are in Austin, Tx., and Lebanon, Tenn. Globally, Dell has plants in Limerick, Ireland; Penang, Malaysia; Xiamen, China; and Eldorado do Sul, Brazil.
