Fujitsu takes 90nm into production

Friday, November 12, 2004

Fujitsu Microelectronics is supplying an ASIC manufactured on its 90nm process technology in volume to the company's mobile phone business.

The chip player is confident that it has addressed the leakage issue that is commonly seen with 90nm process technology.

The production ASIC provides baseband signal processing in Fujitsu 3G mobile phones.

According to Shimpei Hirata, president of Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe, the company has addressed the issue of high leakage circuits, which can push up static current power consumption on 90nm process devices. "There has been a big focus on leakage and as a result the leakage we see on the 90nm part is less than that for 0.13-micron devices," Hirata said.

The Japanese chip company is also designing low cost ASICs on its AccelArray platform ASIC in 90nm process technology.

Platform ASICs are intended to offer some of the functionality and most of the performance of full custom ASICs, but with much lower up front engineering cost. As a result they can compete with high end FPGAs in higher performance applications.

It also means that power consumption of the 90nm process technology is crucial. "This is a very important product for 90nm in order to compete with FPGAs," said Hirata.

Hirata added that the company was also designing its first platform ASICs on a 65nm process technology.
