ProMOS Technologies Inc. said the company is entering final talks with South Korea's Hynix Semiconductor Inc on jointly developing advanced technologies, according to ProMOS spokesman, Albert Lin. ProMOS Technologies is aggressively seeking new technological support after it severed a long-term partnership with Infineon Technologies AG of Germany in late 2002.
However, the South Korean government also requested Hynix explain its plan to open a chip-making factory in China with STMicroelectronics of Europe, which also a detailed report concerning its plan to license Taiwanese chipmaker ProMos Technologies its 90-nm process technology. Lin said the investigation by Korean government would not affect the cooperation deal.
The two companies signed the deal in late September this year, with Hynix pledging to license its 70-nm and 90-nm process technologies in exchange for ProMos Technologies' 300-mm fab capacity. If the talks between two companies push through, ProMOS plans to produce memory chips in its second 12-inch fab in Taichung, central Taiwan. The new plant, worth US$3.2 billion, is scheduled to ramp up production in the third quarter of next year with projected production capacity of 10,000 wafers per month.
