Elpida Memory Inc. has developed a 1-Gbit DDR2 SDRAM device capable of operating at 800-Mbits per second; the world's first SDRAM the company claimed Thursday
The market does not require this today, Elpida said, but added that it plans to offer DDR2-800 devices as and when market demand appears.
The 1-Gbit memory is made with 100-nanometer manufacturing process technology with an layout optimized to reduce speed bottlenecks on the signal and data paths in the memory array and peripherals. This allows for 800 Mbps operation even in a high-density, 1-Gbit device, Elpida said.
The device surpasses the specification used at present for high-end server applications — the DDR2-667 specification which is currently under consideration by JEDEC. "Future DRAM products demand improvements in power and speed to offer the significant performance gains that are crucial to the high-end server market," said Yukio Sakamoto, president of Elpida Memory, in a statement
