Worldwide server market grew 5.5 percent to $11.5 billion in Q3 over the last quarter, marking it the sixth consecutive quarter of positive overall revenue growth, according IDC.
Revenue for midrange enterprise servers declined 10.2 percent from Q3 2003, marking the third consecutive quarterly decline as traditional midrange workloads continue to migrate to volume systems, the firm reported. The high-end enterprise server market, on the other hand, grew 1.9 percent in Q3.
IBM held its top spot in the worldwide server systems market with 31.7 percent market share in factory revenue with revenue up 6.3 percent to $3.7 billion from Q3 2003. Dell, however, showed the biggest growth rate in Q3 with a 14.1 percent increase from Q3 2003 to $1.2 billion in revenue.
In terms of shipments, HP shipped the most units worldwide and maintained its number 2 spot for factory revenue with 26.8 percent share, growing revenue 2.9 percent to $3.1 billion compared to Q3 200303.
Sun and Dell tied for third place in factory revenue of $1.2 billion with 10.2 percent and 10.1 percent share respectively.
The server blade market showed continued growth in the quarter, with shipments increasing by 44.0 percent year over year and factory revenue gaining 22.5 percent sequentially. Overall, bladed servers accounted for $287 million in Q3, representing 2.5 percent of quarterly server market revenue. IBM maintained the number one spot in the server blade market, with 44.2 percent market share.
