Indian consumer electronics and wireless phone services company BPL is in talks with Intel Corp. to set up a jointly-owned plant to build GSM and Wi-Fi dual mode mobile handsets.
According to BPL, Intel is keen on using BPL's existing mobile handset facility in Palakkad, Kerala, where BPL can now produce 150,000 sets each month. Details, such as the ownership structure of the proposed joint venture, have not yet been finalized and further talks are slated in December.
BPL was once a major player in the country's consumer electronics industry but is now struggling as rival Asian vendors such as LG and Samsung launch GSM models in the country. LG has already announced it would launch a mobile handset production facility in India while Samsung is also considering doing the same.
Electronics manufacturing services firms such as Elcoteq are also setting up plants in India to manufacture mobile handsets.
